Use the brief alongside your grocery bill
The headline total measures the same fixed quantities each month. It helps you follow price changes over time, but it is not a quote for your own shopping list. The issue separates items that contributed most to the basket change from large percentage moves elsewhere in the tracked prices.
Each issue names the month the data covers, which can differ from its publication month. Follow the item links for units, full histories and BLS series IDs. Any earlier price reused in the fixed basket keeps its original source month visible, so a missing observation is not presented as a new price.
