A gallon, a dozen and a pound are different quantities: compare the unit as well as the dollar figure before treating one item as cheaper than another.

Categories are directories, not separate basket totals or official BLS inflation indexes. The Basket Report Grocery Basket Price Index uses 24 items and fixed quantities; additional tracked products do not change that definition. Publication dates can vary by series. Open an item’s page to check its latest observation month, and use the data hub for source IDs and downloads when a comparison needs more detail.
